As a wedding photographer, nothing makes me giddier than seeing a couple celebrate their love in a way that feels completely true to who they are. From the moment I met Hannah and James, I knew their elopement plans couldn’t have been a better reflection of them. Their fun-loving energy, beautiful smiles, and quiet compassion for each other were so magnetic — I couldn’t wait to help bring their vision to life.
And let me tell you: the day did not disappoint. In fact, it might be one of my favourite elopements to date.
Hannah arrived in a vintage wedding dress that was bursting with personality. Full of ruffles, charm, and a short, classic veil that made you feel you were watching a John Hughes rom-com. James kept it timeless in a simple black suit. Together, they looked effortlessly cool, as if they’d just stepped out of an 80s film.
From there, the day was completely theirs. No schedule. No rules. Just the two of them — in love and up for anything. Shot entirely on film, we wandered through the streets of Vancouver’s Chinatown: ducking into shops, running through back alleys, taking in some dim sum (of course), and hanging off street lamps. At least 100 strangers offered congratulations at every turn. Throughout each of the 20,000 steps taken this day, every one was full of light, joy and laughter.
It’s so easy to forget what weddings are truly about: two people, in love, who are choosing each other. For some, that looks like a big celebration with all their loved ones around. For others, it’s simply an adventure just for two — intimate, playful, and wildly personal. The truth is: there’s no wrong way to do it, but I encourage every couple to do it in a way that feels you.
For Hannah and James, they embraced that wholeheartedly. And while you look those these photos, I think you'll be able to see exactly what I saw — their love, their spirit, and their deep sense of joy — through these dreamy film photographs in the heart of Chinatown.
